Queen Visits Whitehaven, Witnesses Gurning Champion

It must be indicative of something in the British character that they have one designated word for 'making faces' (with or without a horse collar) ... but what?

'Hockey Night in Canada' Theme to Retire?

I'm not even a hockey fan and I'm affronted. It's the second national anthem, you can't just drop it!

Annoyingly, my favourite thing on Wikipedia has disappeared from the page for gurning, but it used to tell you that people such as David Tennant have incorporated their ability to gurn into their acting to great success.

CBC is getting weirder by the day. You know their primetime show on slot now? A Sex and The City Knockoff!

Canadians have no sense of heritage.

BUT, you have to give the CBC credit for broadcasting most of their programming in HD. Mmmm, sweet, sweet HD.

What interests me is that they have a gurning championship. I always thought is was a 'village fete' sort of thing.

It might have been a village fete thing that called itself the World Championship before anyone else could, depending how much cynicism you harbour in your soul. :)

It looks like she's challenging him. He definitely deserves the win, though.

Hello

So...., I gather that you are a great fan of the British sense of humour... Terry Pratchett, J K Rowling, BBC Radio 4 etc etc... but you may be missing out on a fantastic program on BBC2 (television) called Q.I. with Stephen Fry (who narrates the Harry Potter books here in the UK - and the ONLY narrator in my opinion, sweet as I remember Jim Dale being in the Carry On series :))

To give you an example (which features some of my favorite standup comedians)

and this one(about grammar too, which I know is a bugbear for you..or with you? I'm not sure on that one myself!)

Enjoy!!

I have heard of it, I have even seen clips, and lo I say it is good ... unfortunately it's a TV show, not radio, so I can't get it streaming from the BBC site, as far as I know it is not available as a Region 1 DVD so I can't listen to it while working, and I suspect it's a bit too entertaining to consume while trying to concentrate on something else. I've had to cut back a lot on my radio consumption because I'm animating now instead of just doing busy work and that takes a lot more brain power.

Thanks for the rec, though!

Cousin Annette was just complaining this afternoon about how what with all that is going on in the world, what is the story that leads newscasts? THE HOCKEY SONG!

Well, to play devil's advocate for a minute, most of what's been going on in the world, while full of explosions and injustice and natural disasters and whatnot, has been pretty much business as usual. The hockey song, now, that is NEWs.
