Very interesting article on a possibly quasi-religious experience our dear secular humanist recently had ... it also further reinforces my opinion that Mr Pratchett 'gets' religion better than most religious people I've known.

Oh, he's a true secular humanist, seeing religion for the good and bad that it is. What I love about his satire is it's honesty about human nature, and yet he extracts believable optimism from his tales in the endings.

This article confirms a lot you'd suspect about the man from his writings, and it's all reassuring stuff. Crumbs, I wish something could be done for his Alzheimer's.

His idea for the Krakatoa story made me think of, of all things, Susan Kay's Phantom, and of Erik in the scene that roughly parallells the reprise of "All I Ask of You" in the musical. It's been a while since I've read it, but if I remember right, his reason for going to the roof was to make one last, childish prayer for God to let Christine love him, and instead he finds her and Raoul planning to run away together. What follows is a huge, angry, raging-agains-God monologue that includes the words "Oh, yes, I believe in You, I've always believed in You- You're too infinitely cruel and heartless to not exist..."
