Yeah, that was my best guess too; I'd never even heard 'owned' before 'pwned' became ubiquitous. Thanks to growing up reading English books set in Wales whenever I encounter 'w' where a vowel ought to be I always hear it 'oo' in my head. Honestly 'pooned' is a way more amusing word than 'poned' which is, I guess, how most people say it.
