I've come to the coffee shop to get out of the house while I'm not allowed to be at work (union! [shakes fist]) and so far I've heard two weird covers of songs that were in Moulin Rouge -- first 'In the Name of Love' (is that the title?) sung by a couple of hippie girls and now 'Roxanne' sounding somewhat like Van Morrison doing Samba.

Nothing beats Jeremy Hardy's 'Roxanne'* though. Wow. (Does the audio file work?) Normally Mr Hardy's singing puts me in mind of Nobby doing karaoke but this round is just ... the only word I can find is 'transcendent.'

*Needless to say, copyright the glorious and wonderful BBC; I'm just spreading the joy.

It does! "Roxanne" is the soundtrack to the best drinking game ever - one side of the table drinks on "Roxanne" and the other side drinks on "put on the red light".

It seems do-able... until you get to the chorus. XD

I think the actual title of the first song is "Elephant Love Medley"? But I'm not sure.

'Elephant Love Medley' is made up of a bunch of different pop songs, though ...

I think the U2 song is called Pride (In the Name of Love), although I really do dislike it when people put parts of song titles in parenthesis...

I suspect this is because the band (or writer) would like it called one thing but there's a bleeding obvious title in the lyrics somewhere which is how everyone will recognize it. I find it annoying too but at least it allows me to recognize the song...

The Vons near my apartment occasionally plays weird covers of songs that are just close enough that it takes me a while to notice that something is off. It's like "This SOUNDS like Peter Gabriel singing 'In Your Eyes'... but it doesn't sound like it ENOUGH."

Romancing the Bean. The coffee's not as good as Coffee Bean but it has a large seating area and cushy seats I can sit in sideways, which are my requirements for a hangout spot. We should go sometime! It is most marvellously Vancouver. :)

Yeah ... or, it's a Police song, anyway, so I assume he wrote it. I'm probably bringing on the wrath of indignant Sting fans but I MUCH prefer the version in Moulin Rouge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHO5KWIMZUo) – The drama! The context! The orchestra!

A group did "Roxanne" in a Cabaret I was in. As in, the Moulin Rouge version.
It's very weird. But when you hear it everynight and get to see the stunning choreography in your head every time you hear it forever afterward, it can become very awesome.
