I sit in the back at dailies, so got to know the backs of people's heads long before the fronts. It seemed fitting I should do some rear-view caricatures...

Left to right: Frans Vischer, Mark Henn, Peter Del Vecho, Randy Cartwright, Ron Clements, Ruben Aquino, John Musker, Eric Goldberg, Tony DeRosa, and Nik Ranieri

Most of the time I have to exist in a state of denial to do my job and get through the day, but typing up that list of names made me feel 15 again. :)

Edit: When was the last time you saw one of these? I look forward to giggling over it. :D

Oh my God. Add Glen Keane in there and I would have had a nerdgasm. Ron Clements, John Musker, Eric Goldberg, Mark Henn... wow.

It's kind of depressing seeing you exposed to so much collective talent in one room every day. Depressing only from a personal and rather envious standpoint, of course. You're very lucky (and talented).

Can't miss Eric Goldberg with that wacky mad-scientist hair!

They're all dudes. Which is astonishing, to me, considering that all my drawing life I have only, personally, known two boys who drew and they didn't draw very well. Funny that. They're hiding out somewhere - California, presumably.

Not only is that list exciting, but how cool is it to have a job where you're not only allowed but encouraged to doodle if you get bored?

^ This.

I was gonna comment about Eric Goldberg's hair, too, since I just got a refresher on how he looks watching the Pinocchio Bluray extras, but yeah. You beat me to it. XD

Actually, add Andreas Deja and Chris Sanders when he's not PMSing and that would be sa-weet. :)

I'm a little disappointed Mike Surrey wasn't sitting in the first two rows that day, but he's hard to caricature...

Andreas is often there, just not on the day I did the drawings ... Still, can't argue with that lineup.

It's funny, as I got older, art went from being a 'girly' thing in elementary and middle school to a field more dominated by guys in high school and college, especially in the more serious art classes. Animation especially is extremely male-dominated, but I think this is largely because the male brain is more facile with visualizing three-dimensional objects and analyzing how things work, both very important skills in animating. There are lots more girls in visual development and story, and the cleanup department is predominantly female, possibly in relation to women generally having better fine motor skills and attention to detail.

This is all completely unscientific but everything I've read about the differences between male and female brains is faithfully manifested in the animation world.

Hm, I agree with your theory.

I remember when you said Andreas Deja drew that line on one of your drawings. I also remember how I wasn't the only person squeeing in the comments when you posted it. ;D

Looking at that drawing/colouring book reminds me of how much the Disney movie and book covers always bugged me -- how they go and airbrush a lot of unrealistic (usually -- not so bad in this example) shadows and highlights onto the characters. I much prefer looking at the characters as they appear in the movies.
