I thought, when I made lighthearted sequential art about tremendous suffering and frozen travails, that I was the first to do so, and that I was being unforgivably cruel and hard-hearted.

Then ...

Who is that bespectacled young man? Why is there a hoosh cup? What's with the bundled-up little gnome who insists he's all right? Who drew this?

DR EDWARD ADRIAN WILSON, EVERYBODY.

That's right, mere weeks/months after returning from the most gruelling camping trip ever undertaken, an endeavour which gave The Worst Journey in the World its title, where they nearly died several times and which Cherry described as so horrible 'it beggars the language,' Uncle Bill drew that. The most wonderful person ever to have lived still had a wicked sense of humour.

The image above will take you to the two-page spread from the South Polar Times (an occasional magazine various expeditions compiled to wile away the dark winter hours), but if you want a closer look, here's page 1 and page 2. If you are particularly obsessed it may be worth your time to decipher the phoenetic 'Egyptian' ... As to line 23, Cherry offers the commentary: 'Anything extreme was two-hoops, I don't know why!' Sometimes reading Bill's Edwardian slang sounds like listening to Lt George in Blackadder – Cherry was a 'brick,' the expedition was a real 'snorter,' etc. Whatever you say, Bill.

I swear this is not an April Fool's joke, unless Mysterious Stranger VanDee pulled one on me a few days early. Thank you, VanDee. Thank you.
