I never thought this day would come again.
I am actually excited about an upcoming animated movie. Like, really excited. Like counting-down-the-days excited. Complete trusting excitement without a hint of caution or cynical hedging.
Ladies and Gentlemen: ARTHUR CHRISTMAS.
On the surface it may look a bit hokey, but get this:
- Comes from Aardman Animation, which has a pretty near flawless track record (they even manage to salvage things from Dreamworks' meddling)
- Directed by Barry Cook (Mulan) and Sarah Smith (more on her in a moment)
- Written by Peter Baynham and Sarah Smith
Peter Baynham I know from radio things such as Fist of Fun and The 99p Challenge; he's had quite a successful career, since, but I can never seem to shake the image of him as the 'lifestyle tips' guy. Sarah Smith's name I did not recognize so I looked her up.
She produced both The Armando Iannucci Shows AND the first series of League of Gentlemen? And now she's working at Aardman with Peter Baynham and Barry Cook? How can this be less than awesome?
The only word so far on the story, that it 'apparently reveals Santa Claus’ high-tech operation,' makes it sound quite a lot like Disney's Prep & Landing. Call me a studio traitor but this looks much more interesting, and I have faith in their ability to get a lot more out of the premise. Bring on the Christmas movie battle, I say! I may end up applying for asylum in Bristol in the end, but I know whose flag I'll be flying!
