Sredni Vashtar

I was going to work through lunch today, but then I listened to Sredni Vashtar and couldn't do any more work until I'd drawn this.


I remember listening to this short story the last time it was on and being struck by it. There's something so impishly compelling about it; I think it's mostly down to the idea of a cloistered Edwardian schoolboy spontaneously engaging in such heathen idolatry, but it's got such a ... flavour. I think Saki might have been named as one of Lemony Snicket's influences, which may explain some things.

Just saw this on my network and love it! I think it captures the restrained vicious glee of the end scene so well. Sredni Vashtar was like my gateway drug to Saki's writing.

It would be my gateway drug too, if I weren't stuck in the gate ... If only someone would deliver them to me in convenient audio capsules like this one, which I can listen to while working; that's so much easier than going all the way to the library. ;)
