Radio Gift Basket
Jan. 1st, 2012 12:21 pmI have been catching up on so much radio this week, let me tell you! It hasn't helped that it seems the BBC has decided to use this holiday season to express its love to the world by packing the schedule full of great things. It's an overflowing gift basket of radio love, to ring in the new year!
Oh No It Isn't ... the News Quiz - When I heard the trails for a News Quiz Panto I was very excited, but I had no idea it would turn out to be quite this astounding Finnemoregoria of delightful self-referential absurdism!
Cabin Pressure: Abu Dhabi - Episode 1 of the fabulous and addictive Cabin Pressure! I am not usually a fan of sitcoms but this is solid gold from top to bottom. I would dearly like to kidnap John Finnemore and make him king of the story department at Disney, but there's all this visa stuff and international red tape getting in the way of my dastardly plan. He'd probably be miserable anyway. Sigh.
The Infinite Monkey Cage: the Science of Christmas - I'm a big fan of science and of Mark Gatiss so I was very happy when I found out he'd be on the show, though I was a little puzzled as to why they invited him ... and after having listened to it, I still am, to be honest. Why take someone with such a love of imagination and the power of narrative, and cram him in a box with a bunch of materialists? I wrote up a big long thinky post in my head about this but do not have time to type it all out, so I direct you to the show anyway, and maybe sometime in the future we can all sit down and have a talk about it.
A reminder: A Tale of Two Cities is still available for download, though you'll have to get a move on as I think they start taking episodes down on Monday. I very rarely hear radio dramatisations of books I know quite well, and when I do I'm usually dissatisfied with them, but I really like this adaptation. What they changed they seem to have changed for a good reason, for the benefit of the plot or characters or both, and I respect that! (In some cases ... dare I say it ... it's an improvement.) There's one change towards the end, though, which puzzles me a little, but it's kind of a spoiler so I won't go into it. Anyway, highly recommended – if you like radio drama or Dickens at all, I suggest you download it ASAP, even if you don't get around to listening to it for a while.
The Unbelievable Truth - A new series of lies, lies, trivia, and comedians! This episode expires Monday so listen quick, but there'll be a new one on its heels.
Old Harry's Game New Year's Special - Satan takes a mini-break to the Lake District. Hijinks ensue. Old Harry's Game puts The Screwtape Letters far, far in the shade – and has actual jokes!
A Point of View: The Memory Business - Simon Schama on being a historian present for the unfolding of history in New York on 9/11. You don't need a stirring soundtrack or fighter jet sound effects when you can write like this.
