Okay, now that that's taken care of....
I've been listening to (and sometimes just hearing) Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH at work lately. I remember liking the movie as a child, then reading the book and liking it too, so I don't know if it's "maturity" or the reader that is making it such a chore this time around. The writing isn't fabulous but it isn't bad ... the pacing is a bit slow and none of the characters are terribly interesting, but these could easily be the fault of the reader, who is NOT very interesting at all and tends to let her blandness suck up everything which might be interesting in the text. It may also be because of my recent immersion in the writings of Messrs. Snicket and Pratchett ... frequently I've felt that a certain passage would have had great comedic potential if only someone had pointed it out to the author.
Anyway, she's met the rats (secret organization = cool) now, so one would hope the Interesting Factor will get kicked up a notch.

Date: 2005-05-10 01:52 am (UTC)Like Wee Mad Arthur into Mrs. Frisby? I don't remember much of the book, but even so...for one thing, the book would be a lot shorter.
Or can you imagine shoving the Discworld gang into Lord of the Rings? Vimes would try to arrest Saruman and Stanley would try to get Gollum interested in stamp-collecting instead of ring-collecting.
Or into Dark is Rising? Vetinari would usurp the Dark Rider's position.
