I love pretty much every second of this episode, but my favourite little thing is the extra shot of adrenaline that kicks in on the second ‘Christmas’ in Arthur’s song, as if, in saying it, he realises afresh that it’s Christmas.

Eeeee!

I just listened to this last night (it came up on a random shuffle and... well, it's seasonally appropriate) and was surprised by how much I enjoyed every part of that episode. Arthur's sheer enthusiasm is a thing of joy and wonder.

It's funny how, in my life, there's been a sort of progression from Be Like Douglas (before I knew who Douglas was, but that sort of thing) to Be Like Arthur. There's probably some sort of profound philosophical truth in there about wisdom and fools etc., but I'll leave that to better writers to figure out.

Profound truth? I got nothing. I'm just tired of using up all my energy to keep worrying what other people think of me. I still do care far too much about others' opinions (and it bugs the hell out of me), but I hope to make it through the progression from Martin (impress all the people all of the time! {and fail}) to Douglas (learning patience through big life lessons {him - alcoholism/demotion; me - other stuff}) to Carolyn (nearly there! - screw people who think an old woman can't own a charter company!) to Arthur (yay, twisted power cords!).

I'm somewhere in the Douglas range, I think, with jumps up and down the spectrum.

See, and I have never given much care to what people thought of me, which is where a large number of my problems come from ... it's all a balancing act, I think.

I like the order of your spectrum though. There is a lot of good observation in it, and it makes me less disappointed not to have made the jump from Jaded Smartarse to Enlightened Fool in one go, because there's Unprepossessing Competence between. :)

His EYES!!! I'm kinda thinking this was when they told him that there was a 2nd Xmas at the end of the ep... Or maybe his eyes are even BIGGER then? Hee!
