PUB QUIZ
The angular guy with the backpack I nicknamed "The Anime Prince." He had a double gin-and-tonic.
Pub Quiz rules, I believe, put a significant handicap on people who used their phones.
One of the questions was "Which Shakespeare hero's last words were 'From this time forth, I never will speak word'?" Unless Shakespeare was a flagarant self-plagiariser, that would be Iago – I've only listened to Othello about 150 times, I should know this – but hero? Hero? Protagonist yes; antihero maybe, if you define that as 'the opposite of a hero'; one could (and I would) make an argument for 'case study of the corruption of man' and 'personification of Girardian Satan' ... but NOT. HERO. Unfortunately it was a work night so I had to leave before either the answers were given or I could have the chance to challenge the quizmaster on his assertion. He did seem to be itching for a fight, and my inhibitions about talking to excess about Iago had been banished by a full pint, so we could have been in for a treat. Next time, maybe.
Just off a rather drab and busy commercial highway, lined with big-box stores and shuttered pubs, is a 12th-century chapel which had originally been part of Cambridge's leper hospital, and then was the focal point of an absolutely enormous fair for centuries. What had been the Cambridge Historical Society now puts on a teeny tiny revival of that fair so I finally got to see the inside of the building that had amused me since I first saw it; I didn't get any sketches inside but will post the photo when I get around to posting the people-sketches.
I observed a few weeks ago that Cambridgeshire is full of wizards ... the British Library has its fair share as well.
I was too busy to participate in Open Cambridge as I'd been hoping to do, but did manage to catch a few of the lucky people who did. And some clouds that looked like brioche.
