I think it makes more sense this way... though to be honest, whenever I have heard the song, the third line in the second stanza sounds like it ends with "and that world is lost forever"... oh well.

This reminds me of that old Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles thing:

If God is love and love is blind, and Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles (use singer of choice) is blind, then Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles (use singer of choice) is God.
