Crowe Considers Aubrey Return

Russell Crowe is being plagued by fans of seafaring literary hero Captain Jack Aubrey who want him to return to the high seas for a Master & Commander sequel. The Oscar winner has yet to sign up for a sequel, even though the rest of the entire cast in contracted to return in a second film. He says, "It comes up all the time, man. People I meet - bankers, doctors, pilots - are always pulling me aside and saying, 'So, Captain Aubrey. When do you think he might set sail again? Contractually, with Fox, I'm not required to (appear in a sequel). Everybody else is if they want to do another one. I think Paul Bettany is contracted for three (movies)." Crowe admits he's not completely against the idea of returning as Aubrey. He adds, "There are 20 books and there are so many more adventures. You never know. There are some intriguing ideas, like bringing in his dad, his wife, other characters from the books."

Yeah, I'd heard rumours of some potential follow-ups. I didn't know the whole cast (minus Crowe) was contracted for them ... I'm assuming this only applies to the people who survived the first one. Unless there are madcap adventures with vengeful ghosts and suchlike. (oogabooga!)

Say what you like about him as a person, but I can't imagine anyone else playing Aubrey as well as he did. Luckily the whole cast is amazingly talented, so if the star is replaced they won't all fall apart. By the time they get around to it, though, Blakeney will be all grown up!

Let's see who survived....

OK, the "whole cast" is now Paul Bettany, James D'Arcy, Edward Woodall, Max Pirkis and the guy who plays Killick. Have I forgotten anyone notable who survived? Is it likely they are going to recast all the extras as well, the people we don't really notice? (You probably have noticed them. :-P)

OK, but these are very good actors, and I'm pretty sure they can manage this very well even with a replacement Aubrey. Who are the likely candidates for Aubrey if Crowe won't do it?

How about the plot? It can't be the rescue mission to save the people who are onboard the Acheron with a false doctor. ("We gave Blakeney a growt draught! Worked wonders!") But I hope we get an explaination to what happened afterwards. Loose threads is a little pet peeve of mine.
