473rd Verse, Same as the First

Twenty-four hours to Thud! on the wall,*
Twenty-four hours to Thud!
Take one down, fill it up with work and sleep and stuff and try not to think about how long an hour is,
Twenty-three hours to Thud! on the wall!

*Because hours are traditionally measured on clocks, and most clocks can be found on walls.

* I find that logical :)

473rd verse,
same as the first,
a little bit louder,
a little bit worse.

Precisely.

I think you should take a nap. All this excitment is getting to your brain.

Aw, I'm just a regular old hypocrite. I'm singing with ya. But first...

...I saw 'Thud!' in the bookstore the other day... Other week actually.

Thud!

[identity profile] lepitot.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I saw it in the bookstore too. I read a little bit of it. It seemed good. But, you are right. The cover. Totally. Sucks.

They had a bunch of Terry Pratchet books...but none of them actually said Discworld???

Hah, I bet you can guess what the first word is...

Yes, it's been out in the States for a while. The British/Canadian cover TOTALLY ROCKS. But it's Paul Kidby, so ... go fig.

No, none of them say Discworld. Discworld is just where they are all set; it's a unifying thread in what might otherwise be a bunch of disconnected novels and thereby serves as a handy name for the series as a whole. It could also be called The Humourous, Satirical, and Often Slightly Surreal Fantasy Series but that's just uneconomical.

I believe the Tiffany Aching books have the subtitle 'A Story of Discworld' but that's because they're sort of a side-series, being more YA than the rest of them.

[identity profile] harbek.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, all my books say "A Discworld Novel"...

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, must be a new edition. Though, if memory serves, there's something like 'The 25th Discworld Novel!' on my copy of The Truth...

I must say I quite like the new covers from Corgi. They're nice and understated; they aren't a blaze of bright colours like HarperCollins' paperbacks nor are they a mass of writhing dough which is all I see whenever I look at a Josh Kirby cover. The Corgi ones also have the number in the series very discreetly emblazoned on the back (glossy black on matte black, or vice versa) as if that mattered. It's interesting, at any rate.

I've got the US edition now and it's going back to the store now that I've read it. I want the UK cover.

I favour the theory that we got it so quickly in the US because somebody spent about $5 and 10 minutes on the cover (somebody said that in [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll's LJ, I think).

Look on the bright side; amazon.com doesn't even admit Science of Discworld I and II exist, as far as I can see. I consider myself lucky to have them.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the cover was done months ago; I remember seeing it on Amazon back when Amazon said it'd be released Oct 1. Paul Kidby's cover has been done since the spring – I saw it on his site shortly after Easter.

Will you be posting any spoilers? I haven't gotten it yet (and probably won't even have it in 24 hours), and Pratchett's plots are too good to find out the climax early. Comparing them with JKR's is like the Great A'Tuin versus Om.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
If I mention any spoilers, they will be clearly marked.

I agree 100%. In writing as well – I'm reading one of his earlier books right now (Sourcery) and came across this description of a staff:
"It was made of a black metal, with a meshwork of silver and gold carvings that gave it a rich and sinister tastelessness..."
What a perfect description. And he's only improved. Not to mention the absence of excessive silly romances. The few there are are not silly and are entirely believable as reflected in the characters' thoughts and behaviour. He has utterly spoiled me.

[glee...]

I know!!! I just read an early one (Equal Rites) and the improvement of his style and characterization is amazing! I can't wait for Thud!

[identity profile] lyshigz1989.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
... I still entertain the opinion that you are thoroughly insane. And I respect you for that. But you are throroughly insane.

It makes life more fun. You should try it sometime.

heylooo. my name is katie and i love your artwork! i was visiting your website and found your livejournal and just decided to say hi.

[identity profile] jesidres.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck. And if anyone stands in your way, let me know. I'll make sure the snipers coving you at the bookstore take them out.

*Giggles insanely...then realizes that she does better just grinning, dangling Thud! on a string*

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would there be snipers at a bookstore? You'd think that'd discourage business...

[identity profile] jesidres.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
To make sure the anti-discers don't steal the books.

Ahh, riiiiight. All those orthodox Omnians. The Turtle Moves!

[identity profile] nikitaspy.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's October 4th now, so you're probably totally absorbed in reading by now. Draw us lots of piccies when you're done reading!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting it at lunch, which is ... three hours away. Three hours! But I won't let myself read it until after work, because while I may be able to put it down, I won't be able to extract it from my brain, and that won't be much good for the board cleanup. Belligerent trolls really don't belong in a preschool show.

[identity profile] nikitaspy.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think perhaps that would make it interesting. But then again I'm raised in a country where stories of child-eating trolls are traditional children's entertainment. :-D

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-04 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if we're going for traditional, break out the red-hot iron shoes, eye-gouging pokers, cannibalism, incest, and infanticide ... The children's television content controllers will just love that.

[identity profile] nikitaspy.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
I have actaully seen red-hot branding and cannibalism portrayed in puppet-style shows for children when I was younger. But that wasn't even one of the scary shows for children on No. TV in the 80's. He he he.

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2005-10-17 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
*snicker* Gosh, I'm really glad you have it now.
