For clarification in the coming weeks:

Thud! (a.k.a. THUD!, Thud, and probably THud and THUUUUD!!!!!) is the newest Discworld book, by the inimitable Terry Pratchett. You can find out more about it here. (That may or may not be a sales plug, but Amazon has the most information on it, so there.) So, to newcomers who have not been following my intensely boring Thud! saga, that is what Thud! is, not a randomly abused onomatopoeia.

Thank you. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. This post will remain on top until uncertainties of subject matter are cleared up, so don't forget to scroll down.

Before I tell you what is the first one, you must promise not to read it first. Because the first ... oh, five or so, are not as good as the later ones, so while you may enjoy them they won't give you an accurate impression of the series.

The first one is The Colour of Magic.

Good ones to start with are Mort, Pyramids, Small Gods, Guards! Guards!, or Wyrd Sisters. Really you could start with any of them except Night Watch or, I think, Thud!.

Or Fifth Elephant, maybe. That one's less fun if you don't know the characters.

True, but you'll still get the story. They're all more fun if you know the characters. Except for the one-off ones, of course, because then there are no (or few) stock characters to be familiar with.

Interesante!

Can any one list these books in order or is there a numbering on the books themselves? I am also curious about this.

Thus the need for . . .

American covers. Colour Would confuse too many Americans and booksellers (when trying to search for the title). Still, does not answer the question of why Mourt, Small Gouds, Hougfather, and Gououd Oumens are not sold under those title spellings.
