A shout out to any of my musicologically endowed friends: Do you know the name of the genre of French music usually played on the accordion, usually minor key, and often in 3/4 time, to which much of the Amelie soundtrack belongs? Is this even a genre?

that kind of music is called "bal musette", or "neo musette" (that's for amelie's music, by yann tiersen) I'm a huge fan of that kind of music and I can tell you that almost all of tiersen's albums (especially la valse des monstres, tout est calme, la rue des cascades) are in the same genre as Amelie's soundrack! Hope that helps! ^_^

Ahh, see, I got a 'musette' CD from the library and it was French and accordion, but insufferably major key. I think I'm just going to have to but some Tiersen CDs because the libraries don't have any besides Amelie.

I forgot to mention that l'absente is also a good album for "sad accordion-like music" But you will recognize some titles that were used for amelie. But he really is amongst one of my favourite composers!

Really? It has its own genre? I just call 'em french waltzes... but it makes sense that it would have its own genre, since it's practically a stereotype for French music.

And I would have to wholeheartedly agree with the general awesomeness of the Amelie soundtrack.

Oh, I love the Amélie soundtrack - I could watch that film all day. Have you ever seen Goodbye, Lenin? I think that has a very similar/identical piece of music in when they go off to the summer house... It's so poingant, so lovely... now I want to watch them both again, dammit.

Try searching for folk french instrumental music. Most are in three/four since it is a waltze, so much easier to dance like a fool to. Yaay Amelie! I went to Paris and renacted the Sacre Coeur scene. Someone actually spray painted blue arrows all over the floor!
