You know ...

The rioters in France would win more hearts if they erected barricades and sang rousing anthems.

Yes, rousing anthems really do win over the populace. Everybody likes a good song.

Do you hear the people sing...

singing the songs of angry men?

It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again!

When the beating of your heart
echos the beating of the drums,

There is a life abou to start when tomorrow comes! :-P

...So sorry, but I had to!

I agree, though!

One more day before the storm!
Do I follow where she goes?
At the barricades of freedom!
Shall I join my brothers there?
When our ranks begin to from!
Will I stay and do I dare?
Will you take your place with me?

Ah, Les Miz songs are so much fun to belt out.

I just came back from seeing Le Mis. As a rule, never watch musicals on tour. Javert jumped off the bridge, screamed like a girl instead of singing, and belly-rolled around on the stage for 2 minutes. It was a watery, hilarious death.

Odd, the Javert in the tour production I saw was AWESOME. I liked him more than in any of the recordings... Maybe it was his understudy. Or an off night.

Probably, but...

...reality's not that romantic, I'm afraid :S That, and barricades are not much in fashion nowadays. As for rousing anthems... well, I'm French, and I've never heard a Les Miz song (ever!! Can you believe that?! I read the novel, seen some of the films, but never saw/heard the musical!!)

Anyway, just adding my two cents here... don't believe what you're hearing on TV. We're not in civil war here - that's what I seem to gather from the UK/US news. Riots seem to be calming down, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (at least the ring-wing extremists who want to kick the "loots and hooligans" - even knowing the Minister of Interior, I can't believe he said that! Dangerous idiot - out of France will hopefully calm down, too.) What frightens me most is the formation of small (for the moment) groups of people (generally old-ish) with the French flag over their shoulders singing La Marseillaise - it reminds me of nasty foul-smelling ideas political parties like the Front National wants to spread (basically, France for "ethnically French" people).

Anyway, where I live I haven't seen one car on fire yet. I'll tell you if I do :)

Much of love, and sorry for the length,
Pantxika :]

Exactly! And of course they'd need a lovable urchin. Or at least Eponine. Who could arrest rioters singing that "Drink With Me" song? Or there's the Night Watch route, where they'd be singing the French national anthem (Les Marseilles?). Singing is important. Too bad they have no sense of romance at all. These days, you'd probably rent a Barricade-2-Go or something, which would ruin it.

Seriously, though, I really hope that the riots will stop and the rioters and government can work out an agreement. It must be awful right now.
