One post-graduate student who complained of ringing in his ears after four years of heavy gig-going and Walkman-abuse was told by his university doctor he wasn't surprised - they were the biggest group of new cases of tinnitus he had seen in the past decade.

"Bin the headphones and listen to gentle things like BBC Radio Four," he was told.

I have really small ears, and I can't hear people very well in crowded places like school, but I'm really sensitive to loud noises. You'd think I wouldn't be able to hear them ^^;
I wince in sympathy for the ears of people with mp3 players that you can hear donsh-doonsh-doonshing from 10 feet away. I mean, ow! DX

What surprises me is that the concern has been out there for a long time, but it seems it has not been taken seriously. I have noticed myself that I have to speak REALLY LOUDLY to people now for them to pay attention to me. I admit a have a soft voice, but I never had had to speak this loud. I also think people have gotten so used to things being louder because of the media that they tune out softer noises.

I also find it interesting how easy it is to tune out the world when you wear Ipods. At work we had a running joke about developing conversational cue cards to hold up to people wearing Ipods so one could communicate with them :-) (Like: KINDLY STOP STANDING ON MY FOOT, PLEASE and YOU ARE GOING INTO THE WRONG BATHROOM)

The attention threshold of people probably isn't helped by growing up with cartoons where everyone sounds like they're yelling, like in Dora the Explorer.

Hmmm... I think you are right!

I haven't watched Dora the Explorer, but I did used to watch a lot of Saturday morning cartoons until about two years ago when most of them seemed to be getting loud as you say... almost like they equate people shouting with being funny.
