Pride and Prejudice

tealinI went to see Pride and Prejudice this evening, and enjoyed it rather more than I'd expect from a movie entirely about romance. In brief:
· Tight, tight screenplay! Gotta love the tight screenplay. They seem to be going out of style. It didn't feel abridged at all.
· The costumes made me want to sew.
· Good grief, Keira Knightley is skinny. (Haha, maybe she should play Magrat ... except not)
· Did ... wossname, the soldier guy, did he look like they wanted to cast Orlando Bloom but had to settle for someone else?
· Mr Darcy was actually likeable underneath. I know it may not be strictly canon but I think it's kind of important that the audience believe the main character's inevitable spouse to be, in some hidden respect, an amiable but socially awkward fellow who she can actually love. Colin Firth may have rugged good looks but he is not entirely sympathetic.
· I spent much of the movie coming to the conclusion that Mr Darcy looks like David Wenham (Faramir) with a splash, somehow, of Alan Rickman.
· The lady who played Darcy's friend's sister (I'm so bad with names) – what a face, and hair, and bearing! I wanted to draw her, she was the perfect character! I mean, not in personality, but the work put into making her physical appearance match her personality was perfect.
· I'm sorry, but the Universal Studios title card music is as much a part of the Master and Commander soundtrack as any Bach or Boccherini. It got me all excited to see tall ships and cannons and storms and .... yeah. Well, there were cravats, at least. And Marines! Haha, Lydia should have run off with Capt Howard [snerk]

Only one thing
Date: 2006-01-27 02:16 am (UTC)The entire film was beatuifully dramaturged, sets and costumes were on teh whole, stunning. One thing bothered me though: When Lizzy is off at Darcy's and looks out over the lake, there are these two fountains shooting seven metres into the air. How, in that time peariod would that have been possible?
