FRIDAY'S SKETCHBOOK
Page One - A couple attempts at Angua (I get her better when I start with her eyes, which would make her very hard to pose out in a scene), a couple doodles demonstrating that I know almost as much about wolf anatomy as horse, and a bus person.
Page Two - Random bus people, including a young man who I surreptitiously tried to sketch, because he looked like Tonker is trying to, but I was afraid that if he saw me sketching him he'd beat me up. The sketch turned out looking nothing like him, alas. Oh yes, and Perdita X. Dream, after her radical weight loss therapy.
Page Three - Studies from 'Rabbit Seasoning' now that I've got it back from my sister. Perhaps I shall go ahead with the gag sketch today. (MWAHAHAHAHA!!)
Page Four - Ditto.
I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but I need an excuse to spend a lot of time on the computer tomorrow so I might update my wesbite. Nothing you won't have seen here, but it's got to be done eventually...

Date: 2006-03-11 06:40 pm (UTC)If the buff boy had gotten angry you could possibly have sweet talked him by saying you needed reference on what a strong man looks like :P They like it when you stroke their egoes. Was he one of those body builder wannabes who looks like somebody has put a tyre pump in their belly button and inflated them? Because those are just tragic...

Date: 2006-03-13 02:26 am (UTC)I always like supporting people who have unique and realistic views in fan art :-). I just never saw Angua as having waist or hip length hair. It seemed so impractical, somehow. I am lucky cuz I was inspired by a rather Angua like sister (and best friend) who has very, very thick ash blonde hair (amazingly, her hair is very light but her eyes are a beautiful golden-green-brown color like a wolf´s eyes would be). She is my spiritual model for Angua because she has that stunning combination of exotic wild beauty and adventerous physical flexibility and love of the wilderness person. She has done some outdoor adventure things that totally amaze me like trekking the Peruvian rain forest and canoeing Missouri river rapids in the winter when they are at high rapids and quite dangerous, but she makes it look easy. Plus until she became a mom she worked as a pet shop manager for a store selling amimal supplies and finding homes for animal shelter dogs and cats. She lives in a wilderness area of our home state and loves wild animals and supports various programs to protect wild animals in our home state (Missouri- which is mostly wilderness that does seem a bit like Uberwald to me with its small yet wild mountains and forests and very lively supernatural folkore of otherworldly creatures) To me, when I see Angua, I see my sister. And your picture comes close to how I imagine Angua! And my sister would agree with you, too. She lets her hair grow down to her waist and hips but cuts it off to donate to "Locks of Love", a charity fund to create wigs for children who have lost hair to chemotherapy. She is the first to admit that having hair that is really thick grow to her waist in a pain in the nether portions because you cannot move around easily- you cannot even drive a car easily unless you hair is pinned up in a bun. If she wears her hair loose while driving she cannot even move naturally to use the brakes without getting her hair tangled up as she moves to use the brake pedal. She only lets it grow so she can cut it off to donate to charity. If she were a police officer, she would wear her hair the same length as your Angua does. So she and I would be BIG supporters of your Angua with the lovely thick hair that is also practical to manage and looks somehow like a wild wolf even in human form.

One never knows what sort of personal gadgets people have these days.

Date: 2006-03-18 03:29 am (UTC)I have not seen Napoleon Dynamite yet so I cannot respond on that, but I did not think your comment was inappropriate. I think my sister would have appreciated it, too. I think most women enjoy being admired in a nice and respectful way. My sister is very happily married, but I am sure she would appreciate it that people find her lifestyle admirable. She has a great husband but both she and he often face flack from society about their views on protecting the environment and that she has become a stay at home mom in a part of America where women are expected to be both Supermom and the super career executive. I think it was the right choice because she is raising some great kids and also has time to spend with her husband and daughters in environmental conservation activities and also just enjoying the nature in Missouri, our home state.
It is always nice other people like you value and appreciate their values. I am proud of my sister and I like that other people see how great she is, too.

Date: 2006-03-19 03:42 am (UTC)Thanks for the ND recomendation. Maybe I will check it out. Anyway, it takes place in Idaho, one of those U.S. states (besides Utah) that seems really cool to me. In some ways N.D. reminds me of a wonderful, fantastic Icelandic movie called "Nóí Albíni" (Noah the Albino) that deals with the similar topic of a young guy in a stunningly beautiful area of Iceland that is isolated and how he tries to overcome the physical geography of the area where he lives (the Westfjords, I believe) to link up with what he thinks is "the real world" in Iceland. It is a great movie.

Date: 2006-03-13 04:18 pm (UTC)-Love the Angua pic's - particularly on the left (the attitude seems right)- other than the middle being a little truncated (as has already been mentioned) the wolf looks great - could be interesting to see less "human" eyes on the wolf and more wolfish eyes on the woman (I realize you weren't going for color or great detail in this sketch, and that it's difficult to communicate human expression or eye direction in animal eyes - doesn't fit with the classic Disney style, either - I just think wolves' eyes are so strikingly beautiful and terrifying at the same time) Ok, this is already too long, but I'm in it now, so...
-Totally agree with the hair length decision - smart!
-Gorgeous "bus-people" sketches (who cares if they're completely accurate? You doubtless couldn't help improving them - this is art, not photography!) - totally thought of Tonker before reading your caption
-NICE study/deconstruction of the Chuck Jones style - can't wait to see what you do with this!
