I have just recently noticed that the US Army has found a new slogan. Gone are the days of the G.I.Joe-ish 'Be All That You Can Be in the Army' and the slightly ambiguous 'Go Army' ... Now it appears to be Army Strong.

Um ... ?

Er... maybe that's as in 'Army Strong. You not strong. Army fight you. You dead now.' ? I kinda dread to imagine, really...

Inappropriate use of "army" as an adjective. You can be "quite strong" or "very strong" or "Army strong". Which leads to a whole new array of phrases, really. Mess-hall food is "Army yummy"; really loud concerts can be "army loud" and of course a mobile telephone in the theatre is "army annoying". :D

Alas, there is no "army sexy".

This is probably a good thing...

Though I suppose you could use it as a pickup line. "Hey baby. You're looking army tonight. You can storm my garrison anytime."

You gotta be careful there, though. 'Cause you don't want postwar occupation.

(Seriously...I think I just wrote a standup routine. I'll stop now.)

I liked "Army of one". I think every country should have an army of one.

Military disputes to be settled by a dance-off.

That is the best idea concerning the military that I have heard for a very long time. :D

It reminds me of cheese. I hate how they have those tv commercials that are all sappy and making the army look like its amazing or something.

Ahh, that would be the Canadian armed forces ... 'Join the Army and have a Heartwarming Time Helping People.'

I am wryly fond of one of their bits of PR, though, which I'll post in a few days, not so close to such a sensitive holiday.

Now, now...making fun of a marketing campaign (and who knows who, exactly, is responsible for that?) is not necessarily the same as marginalizing those fine young men and women who belong to the army and sacrifice far too much for the rest of us (hopefully people will join in spite of this new slogan and not because of it!). I certainly don't equate the quality of the films my studio produces with the botched marketing campaigns devised by another division of the company to promote them (well, not every time, anyway) - it's actually quite infuriating to have such talent and effort to be so stupidly represented - if I were a serviceperson, I'd be pretty ticked off, I think!

My high school was in a poor area of town, so the marines used to recruit all the time, even walking the school corridors in their uniforms and having marine related events. They showed a video to my PE class.

Apparently, the Marines slogan is "Join the Marines. Fight the big lava monster." o_0

The Territorial Army adverts here are a little less... grammar-slaughtering. They still irritate me, though. "For the adventure... For the friendship... For the experience..." But not, oddly enough, for the bullets potentially cracking your skull.

Army of One was my favourite, I thought it was meaningful and stuff. :(

Sounds like deodorant ad to me.

Maybe they were going for minimalism?

Well, whatever they were going for, much more of this and I'm going to have to write an obituary for the English language.

As an English major, this makes me very sad.
