Of all the Lovecraft stories I've listened to* I like the Herbert West ones the best. This is probably because instead of the main character having wacky things happen to him,** as in most of the stories, Dr West makes them happen, or is at least responsible for 90% of the plot. And, it must be said, I find myself identifying with his monomania and emotional detachment, for better or worse, though my interest lies more in imparting life to lifeless lines rather than dead boxers or decapitated Canadian officers...

Anyway, here's a mediocre artistic encapsulation of the formula to the stories (which you can read here if you're interested):

Apparently Dr West = Milo + Wiggins ... erm.

*Again thanks to my generous friend and his CD burner ... I haven't managed to actually read any yet, though considering I haven't been able to actually read anything for the last two months any such attempt would probably have failed anwyay.
**I wonder what Mr Lovecraft would think of me describing his horror as 'wacky'...

*giggle* I went ahead and read the stories with these drawings fresh in my mind, and I will confess I laughed out loud more than once.

All of these pictures made me giggle helplessly, even though all I know about Lovecraft is that a big squiddy thing features.

I haven't looked at your drawings since May. You've gotten better, hooray for you! Where did you come up with the dead body with the sheet over it? I bet that was hard to draw. Did you have a reference photo or something? Drapery..gotta love it.

Well, dead bodies (on TV or movies, anyway) always have sheets over them. That's how you can tell they're dead. As for the drapery, well ... I just ... thought about it? Lots of observational sketches give you a pretty good idea of the physics behind hanging cloth, and it's generally pretty easy to figure out once you know what's going on. The hard part is simplifying it, which I am becoming much less good at since I haven't had to keep anything simple for production purposes for quite some time.

I'm glad you think I've gotten better since May ... I feel like the last year has been like walking up a down escalator.

The AIEEE!!! brings back memories of many hours spent reading 'Garfield' commic strips. Dr. West even looks a little like Jon Arbuckle with his eyes popping out of his head. This makes me laugh even though I have no clue what it's about.

Milo + Wiggins = Dr. West

I LOVE it. XD

*dies* That's pretty much the best summary of the Herbert West saga I've ever seen. Their facial expressions! I love it.

This is so weird, I was just browsing through this graphic book devoted to this writer (whom I didn't know about)in the library at school! I just picked it out of random, 'cause I was bored, and was intrigued by the illustrations by the artists, and then by the writing. He's one crazy dude, but I liked what I read.

This is very good. The characterization is fantastic. Great job! (Love that zombie!)

Well, upon reading that I think I've been freshly . . . er, bad word choice . . . mentally scarred and I'll be sleeping with the lights ON for a while.

However, your 'encapsulation' is amazing and hilarious, and I'm going to use it to ward off nightmares. Bravo. ^_~

I agree! I really liked the zombie.
Zombie-Tann? AAAAAAAA! Only if your capacity for debate survives! (Although it might be slightly amusing to watch your vocabulary slowly degenerate along with your rotting brain :) - anybody care to translate one of Tann's eloquent epistles into "Zombie"?)

I tried to type in "Twirlynoodle.livejournal.com" to get here, and accidentally left out the "Livejournal" part. I ended up on "twirlynoodle.com" looking at a sign saying "coming soon". Is this connected with you in any way, or someone else using the same name?

Hah! For being such a morbid subject, undeath can be highly amusing at times.

Actually, I find it amusing most of the time. I have a weird sense of humor.

Personally, in West's shoes, I'd do it on small animals as "Proof of concept," instead of humans. An undead hamster or lab-rat's a lot less dangerous to have around.

Either that, or I'd move to Chicago---the Machine there would welcome my talents. "At last! I have the FORMULA! Now every dead man and woman in Chicago shall vote Democratic...FOREVER! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

(If you're not aware of it, Chicago's famous for its get-out-the-vote drives in the cemeteries.)

And HPL his ownself didn't care much for the "Herbert West" stories. I think he'd be mortified to find out that people are still reading them...

Date: 2007-01-25 05:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
He did do it on small animals, and larger animals, but apparently the formula was dependent on species. It sounds like a construct to excuse rampant zombiefication across six stories, but it works well enough, I suppose...

I like lots of things HPL didn't like. I'm sure his horror at finding people still reading his disliked stories would be amplified by their being rendered into cartoony drawings. Oh well, he'll just have to climb out of his grave and give me a smack then, won't he?

Actually, he'd probably be amused by your drawings. He had a lot more of a sense of humour about his work than a lot of people (especially his more rabid fans) do. He just thought "Herbert West---Reanimator" was hackwork from his early period.

Kind of like how you may feel looking back at early drawings you did for assignments: "Was I ever THAT bad?"

He also didn't care for how he'd had to re-cap the earlier action at the start of each new part---the stories had been serialized somewhere.
