16 DAYS TO MAKING MONEY*!!!

Mmm, gotta love a tasty pre-order. Whenever I think about it, it makes me smile.

PEAS BE WITH YOU!
Everyone involved in that ROCKS. Go see their website!

*I am pretending the US does not get the book on Sept 18th because if I dwell on that I will go MAD at the injustice! Does being a member of the Commonwealth and having the Queen on our coins mean NOTHING to the publishing industry (besides getting the vastly superior covers)?! Don't you DARE tell me anything about the book until it comes out up here!

It's going to be so hard, because I work in a bookstore and I'll want my copy :(

Weeeeeell, you could always ... read it ... on breaks ...

(I am a bad influence)

Heee, I probably still will XD And I finally get to work with Pterry fans, so we can fangirl (well, fanboy it in the case of one of my coworkers) it together :D

(But see, I have the same thought, so it only proves that great minds think alike. Especially when it comes to bad influences. Or something).

Oh man I can't wait either. I live in the U.S. but I'm going to order the British version, 'cos I want a Paul Kidby cover instead of generic clipart. Man, how does this guy keep up these book-a-year-or-more releases without a drop in quality?

I don't know but I'm not complaining! Ahahaha!!

I'm going to order the U.S. version and pretend I have the British cover. (I dun't wanna pay shipping from the UK) Why are the U.S. covers different? Wouldn't it save money to pay just one artist?

Oh, and the U.S. paperback covers suck so bad.

Damn. The UK cover is stylish.

They're different companies; I suppose the US publisher just pays for the distribution rights but not the artwork. Also it probably has something to do with market research. How anyone can eschew Paul Kidby's work, I do NOT know, but one cannot deny that the American covers are ... er ... splashier.

My theory on the US covers:

I think what the US publishers are trying to do is position Discworld novels in the same vein as books by Florida satire writer Carl Hiaasen (not sure I spelled that right) Hiaasen books have these kind of clip arty super bright colored covers, so the Discworld ones do, too. Example is here: http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Girl-Carl-Hiaasen/dp/0446581755/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-8197759-3296718?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190309524&sr=8-1

I am okay with the recent US covers overall- they do catch the eye- but I do MUCH prefer the Kidby art and wish the US publisher would be able to display it.

I did like the paperback Going Postal cover in the USA- I like to think it was a nice little take on the Kevin Costner movie "The Postman"

P.S. Typography is different too. Figure THAT one out. :P

P.P.S. You could order it from Canada instead of the UK; we've got the same covers and shipping would (probably) be less, and more eco-friendly!

I will be buying mine tomorrow and pulling the dust jacket off. I used to order the UK versions for the covers until I realized that I did the exact same thing with them haha. So I figure why bother. XD

Here's to hoping that the horrible local bookstore gets it on time, and that I don't have to go through the Wintersmith fiasco again - they have a copy, it disappears, seemingly forever, I get it in the US months later with the inferior cover, and now that I'm back in Canada, they have it again. :(

Haha, if it makes you feel any better, none of the Chapters in town had Thud! until about two or three weeks after it came out. That's a major national chain! Apparently they just have poor priorities!

Well we have a Coles, which I think is part of the Chapters evil empire, so that's probably why. Then again, reading isn't exactly the most popular pasttime around here, so maybe they see no reason to be on time. I mean, you can't read when you're drunk.

From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Oh man, Coles SUCKS. I remember going to the West Edmonton Mall, which has about a gajillion stores of no interest to me, but there was a Coles and there was not one thing in the entire store worth buying. It's like the grocery-checkout-aisle version of Chapters.

There's always the internet!

Haha, what a ringing endorsement of your town... wow.

Well, I go to StFX, so Atlantic Canada + university + liquor store bigger than my house = only one possibility.

Grocery-checkout-aisle version is a very good description, now that I think of it. Romance novels, kids' books, and every Sylvia Brown book ever written.

Just wondering, if someone forced them to leave a place unjustly, would they be liable for a split-pea suit?

You know, if you didn't have it pre-ordered, I'd just send you a copy. You must remember that you have Discworld fan friends down here!

:won't mention that I'm going to a Terry Prachett signing on the 24th:

From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Yeah, but by the time it got here I'd have my nice pretty Brit/Canuck one. [shakes fist at Canada Post] I got a US Going Postal and the page layout and typography were so vastly inferior I gave it away and bought myself a good one.

I've been to a Pratchett signing. Good times. Have fun!
