First publicly released image from the New and Improved Rapunzel:

CLICK FOR TO MAKE BIGGAR!

This is a piece of concept art by Andy Harkness, not a final still from the movie, though of course they're going to try to make it look like that. There seems to be some confusion: Rapunzel is not going to be 2D. It is a 3D film. A very nice 3D film, but it is 3D, not 2D. No matter how much some people may plead and moan, the directors want it 3D and they're the ones in charge.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] floramir for pointing this out, and to [livejournal.com profile] aspectabund for posting the BIG one (and some little ones wot you can see in the comments)! Also to Yahoo Movies and the AP for distributing it. Booo to Aint-it-Cool for being slooooow. :P

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. AAAAAAAAAAAH.

Nope, 3D, through and through. This would just be a bit of concept art, I would hazard. But Glen Keane has said that he wants it to have that sort of 2D feel to it. Here's a much passed-about shot of Rapunzel, to show you: http://gallery.awn.com/data/521/Rapunzel-Unbraided.jpg

Yeah, that's one of the old pieces from Rapunzel Unbraided. As is ... obvious ... in the filename. (dur.)

As it stands now, it's going to be 3D, and as much as I (and many others) dream and wish upon a star, it will probably stay being 3D unless the Hand of God (a.k.a. Ed Catmull) says unto Glen: I COMMAND THEE, MAKE IT A 2D FILM. Sigh. At least it looks like it's going to be really cool 3D.

I would really much prefer never again to see 'tradigital' animation (see Sinbad and Treasure Planet) ... one of the strengths of a 2D production is that you can cheat elements of the background and characters to give you a good composition and a different 'feel,' something I felt was sorely lacking in the very sterile sets of Treasure Planet. I'd rather see a nicely art-directed 3D film than some weird mutt that loses the strengths of both media in its awkward compromise.

What if The Princess and the Frog makes lots of money? Would they at least make more 2D animated stuff, even if it isn't Rapunzel? My little hopeful 2D bubble was popped when I read the Disney line up. As much as I love 2D, the Frog Princess thing doesn't appeal to me much story-wise, and I was hoping they would make more... and better 2D... 8(

By the time P&F makes a lot of money it'll be too late to change what medium Rapunzel is in.

I like the look of that. It's 3D, while still being 'Disney' as opposed to 'Pixar' 3D.
