First publicly released image from the New and Improved Rapunzel:

CLICK FOR TO MAKE BIGGAR!

This is a piece of concept art by Andy Harkness, not a final still from the movie, though of course they're going to try to make it look like that. There seems to be some confusion: Rapunzel is not going to be 2D. It is a 3D film. A very nice 3D film, but it is 3D, not 2D. No matter how much some people may plead and moan, the directors want it 3D and they're the ones in charge.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] floramir for pointing this out, and to [livejournal.com profile] aspectabund for posting the BIG one (and some little ones wot you can see in the comments)! Also to Yahoo Movies and the AP for distributing it. Booo to Aint-it-Cool for being slooooow. :P

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. AAAAAAAAAAAH.

:D :D :D :D

It looks like they actually went with common sense and had her attach her hair to a post before letting it down. No falling for this chick!

It looks like they went the pulley route, which still could lead to pain.

Although having that much hair would be painful, wouldn't it? The weight would be immense, the strain on her back...not to mention what brushing must be like. Ah, fairytales, you beautiful things. This is why adulthood sucks; suddenly you're thinking in terms of scoliosis and hair conditioner instead of the beauty of the tale. Darn it.

That, my friend, is breathtaking.

I'm so glad I've got someone on my friends' page who is just as thoroughly excited about this picture as I am. I don't think you could possibly oversell it.

And duuude, I know that it is awesome ... and 90% of the awesome is not even hinted at in this picture!

I saw these pictures earlier in a Disney forum and I went YAAAYYY! I'm so excited about this movie, it brings new aspectos of animation that I'm dying to see, like that canvas effect they're gonna give it or something like that? I can't remember exactly.

And you're like, so near the real action! It must be so exciting! I hope you can tell us little bits of this whenever you can. Oversell this as much as you want!

OMG I AM SO EXCITEDDDDDDDD. OMG OMG OMG.

*needs resuscitation*

OKOK. So like. This is a poster for Rapunzel. But the guy looks 2D. OK I AM EXCITED NOW.

Aghhhhh... *firmly hopes to walk those hallowed halls sometime this year*

It's not 2D. I repeat, RAPUNZEL IS NOT 2D. This is a piece of concept art, not a still from the movie. There are no stills from the movie.

Ooh, that thar's some nice art.

Sooo... just clearing up, this's gonna be 2D, right? Or sort of 2D characters, 3D backgrounds like in Treasure Planet? Except hopefully better integrated?

Date: 2008-04-13 04:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aspectabund.livejournal.com
Nope, 3D, through and through. This would just be a bit of concept art, I would hazard. But Glen Keane has said that he wants it to have that sort of 2D feel to it. Here's a much passed-about shot of Rapunzel, to show you: http://gallery.awn.com/data/521/Rapunzel-Unbraided.jpg

There was a first film?
When? Why didn't I know? ^^ Can't have been one of the long ones...
Because, in Disneyland Paris where I'll gladly start working this summer there's a boatride through a kind of garden full of miniature Fairy Tale Sceneries and I've always wondered why Rapunzel's tower was in there... ^^

There was an earlier version of the film but luckily Pixar took over Disney Animation before it got much further than storyboards. That is what the old test footage was from, which you can still find online places. It was called Rapunzel Unbraided and was very, very different.

This just looks awesome. I'm so glad they've gone back to the original, hand-drawn animation. There is just a classic, more accomplished, time driven feel to it that just makes me appreciate these films a whole lot more.

I was looking at IMDB for this movie and it says that it is a musical (woot!). I know this can change and could be incorrect, but I'm so hoping for the total classic Disney to come back into play. I know this isn't your department there, but do you have any idea who's signed on to do the music?

If you say Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, I may just have to drive down to the studios and start passing out gold stars personally. :)

Aw, now I really wish it was a 2D movie. This picture, in all its glory, makes me miss the excitement of a good 2D princess movie.

AW! You gave me credit. =)

I'm glad you found the big one, because when I originally saw it (and snagged it) from yahoo, it WAS big. But I didn't know how to actually post the photo in a comment, so I went searching for it on yahoo, and all I could find was the small version. =(

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is totally, insanely excited about this movie. I know it'll be perfect, that they'll do all kinds of genius stuff with it, but I'm still so darn curious about what they're going to DO. Well, as long as they make it a musical, then I'll be happy. Preferably a GOOD musical.

Just out of curiosity (and not to pick on you specifically because a number of people have mentioned the same thing) what is it about fairy tales that immediately equals musical? I mean, musicals usually have a very definite plot structure, explicit character development, and an emotional climax, whereas fairy tales (in their original forms at least) usually have none of the above. I suppose it's an easy fix to give a fairy tale these things by plugging in a musical formula (the character development song, the show-stopping entertainment song, the love song, etc) but would anyone ever consider making a fairy tale movie the hard way, i.e. actually working drama into the plot as opposed to dropping in songs and working around them? Would anyone watch it? Is anyone hoping The Bear and the Bow or King of the Elves is a musical? Can you have a fairy-tale musical without a princess, or a princess without songs, or are the two mutually required?

Ramble, ramble, rant rant rant.

Thanks for sharing--this movie looks great! I too am wistful for more 2D, but it looks like it's going to be beautifully art-directed 3D, which also makes me happy. Also, can you go wrong with Glen Keane in the lead? I mean, really?

Well, they were going drastically wrong with Rapunzel Unbraided but that was because they weren't letting him Do His Thing. Now he is, FTW!
