I wonder where they got the "Maldonia" name from. The "Mal" could easily mean sick, and "nia" is a common enough country name ending.
It reminded me of a cartoon I watched when I was younger, and it showed Aquaman swimming to the undersea city of Mal de Mare. I got a big kick out of that.
'Maldonia' sounds to me like a cross between 'Moldova' and 'Macedonia.' It sounds more European and instantly placeable than the country name they used to have.
