Man o man... why don't we get the Paul Kidby covers in the good ol' USA? I mean, the American cover looks passably decent *this* time, but it doesn't even compare to the British release!!! Weak.
Oh, right, one more thing. Think of me when the floggings commence, 'cos I'm hot and that will help keep your mind from dwelling on the terrible pain. I'm generous like that.
1. Some marketing person at HarperCollins said, "People like bright colors! Let's make them with bright colors!"* 2. Some marketing person at HarperCollins said, "If we make the cover a lovely painting, someone might confuse these books with all the other fantasy novels that have lovely paintings. Can't be having that. Call up the Graphic Design crew." 3. Some marketing person at HarperCollins said, "We need something that says ... 'funny.'" 4. They didn't like Josh Kirby's art, way back when, so in the distribution deal HarperCollins said they'd do their own covers, thank you very much, and now they're stuck with the consequences. 5. They're jealous.
*See, they're American, so they spell 'colour' without a u and use double quotes. ;)
