There it was, a faint flicker as Vimes glanced momentarily at some paperwork in front of him. Lotto! thought William.*

plimsoll - (n.) A rubber-soled cloth shoe; a sneaker.
I looked up this word last week to see if it actually existed and ever since then – especially today – I've been hearing it all over.

What brought the plimsoll up? P.G. Wodehouse? Or did Terry Pratchett use it too?

I have had that happen numerous times with odd-sounding words I haven't encountered before. Oddly enough, the most recent word that has had that phenomonon happen to it was 'cuckold.' I read it in a book and looked it up, then read it in the newspaper and heard someone use it in conversation the next day.

Freaky........

Wow....... that's really creepy....... that's exactly what happens to me every once and a while. I learn the meaning of a new word, and suddenly I start hearing it everywhere. I can't decide whether it's because I'm paying more attention or because of something else........ at least I know I'm not the only one!

If we are assuming that lotto in fact is the same as the 'lottery', then why the heck haven't we heard more about it?, because it is the most Dibbleresque notion I've ever heard. (Okay, getting people to give you money for the chance that they might win money with numbers that you control!? DIBBLER!)

:D That same happened to me with 'cocking a snook' and 'ineffable'. Once I looked those words up, they appeared everywhere.
