Yeah. I'm really suffering for lack of artistic challenge ... I'm not getting any at work and I don't have enough inspiration or influences at home. I have not only hit a wall but am gradually slipping down it and before long it'll be like I've never been to animation school at all.... I just have to make myself slog through it because I know that's the only way to beat it. It's so discouraging.

Anyway, the purpose of the cut: Here's my first halfway-decent Otto Chriek ... still not right but at least he's starting to look a bit more like himself.

Perhaps I'll cheer up if I work on the world's only The Truth/FLCL/Red Dwarf crossover gag sketch. If it doesn't frustrate me too much.

Ooh hey, nothing like procrastination and sticking one's head in the sand to avoid unpleasant feelings! Here's a test recently found on [livejournal.com profile] buttfacemakani's journal...

Forgive me, but ... Los Angeles, the Middle East, and Mexico are reserved, calm, and intellectual? Am I missing something?

Hmm...but your new Lily is good! And there's nothing wrong with your James and Sirius!

(You could always write to me if art is too frustrating.)

That "What I Need" picture? Is brilliant. 'Cause I only feel like that 360 days out of the year. A fellow artist feels your pain. ♥

Aha, that Otto Chriek is like what Uncle Olaf's brother would look like if Uncle Olaf had a reasonably nice and rather normal brother.

In some ways a vampire actually is nicer and more normal than Uncle Olaf...

True. Especially when he's a Black Ribboner.

Don't you mean count Olaf? Kinda funny though, I really have an uncle Olaf. Maybe you have one too, Chic?

I'm feeling your frustration, Tealin. I feel the same way about my writing.

Oh right. No, I don't have an Uncle Olaf, I'm just an imbecile. lol

I do? Gee, I never noticed how all my drawings seem to be of romantic couples.

Actually your Chriek's expression is pretty close to what I'd imagined. And AARGH, I know the feeling.

Try taking a break with some fellow animators. Wander through a museum snickering at Art, or maybe do something that has absolutely no connection to your craft. It sometimes works wonders.

:D

Well...there's nothing like watching a good bit of Master and Commander, right? ^_^ You just need a break. Go camping or something. Watch Kiki's Delivery Service and take some advice from the artist lady. ;) Miyazaki solves everything, Mwa ha. You'll be fine after a couple of days! Don't worry!

Once you read Thud, I'll bet you'll be full of inspiration*. Terry Pratchett is good at prodding buttock.

*at least, I hope, because I can't wait to read the book and I can't wait to see your drawings relating to it.

Nice test! I don't know what that says about me but I'm a RCUEI:

atheist/agnostic tendencies, unconcerned with public image, lower energy level, does not value tradition, avoidant, does not put the welfare of others above self, not punctual, unproductive, does not believe in human goodness, not easily moved to tears, seldom bothered by the suffering of strangers, insensitive to the needs of others, relaxed, quiet around strangers, tendency to believe only in self, people have trouble reading them but they don't care, late finishing work, acts without planning, withdrawn, rarely too busy, not a perfectionist, uncooperative, not prone to complimenting people, does not believe in life after death, avoids crowds, prefers unpredictable to organized, not passionate about bettering the world's condition, does not second guess self, able to control cravings, calm in crisis, ambivalent to the feelings of others, believes in the importance of art, dislikes small talk, socially uncomfortable, private, not known for generosity, acts without consulting others, hard to get to know, not easily frustrated, interested in intellectual pursuits, not open about feelings, loner, asks many questions, open to change, influenced more by self than others, bored at work

...

I guess it means that noone wants to come near me but I don't care anyway, which is about right...

I really love your art, and I hope you get out of this hard spot, beacause I may be 'seldom bothered by the suffering of strangers', but I 'believe in the importance of art'. :P *innocent face* How about a Goblet Project?

From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Blargh, no, no Goblet Project. There's a reason I haven't drawn much from the last three books and that is that they don't inspire m much, to be honest. There is about ... hm, one picture I've been meaning to do from GoF but I have absolutely no motivation to do it and whenever I try to picture it in my head, all I get is the highly unsatisfactory sketch I did when I was 18. I'll have to get back to it once I've done some life drawing and can actually draw people again.

Muse? Who said that was a muse? That's very clearly 'Really great inspiration/mad skillz (in disguise)'! I can see how that would be confused with musehood, but ... no. Muses inspire, Really Great Inspiration/Mad Skillz (In Disguise)s kick you off your chair, as clearly demonstrated.

The costume likely comes from the fact that everything I read and/or draw lately seems to be costumed between 1750 and 1870, but is most likely attributable to the fact that immediately before drawing this, I had just been making notes on Georgian costume for my sister.

My perception of the Apocalypse has been forever skewed by Messrs Gaiman and Pratchett... frankly, any Death who doesn't speak in just isn't worth the effort.

hmmm

Both our muses have high boots! Hehe.
I hope you find inspiration, there's nothing more frustrating than lack of challenge. I like Otto's face (specially the fangs) and the explorer's waistcoat ( or vest, wathever)And the your's muse swing leg motion, though that must hurt :P

You're really good!

haha, they keep calling him a muse, even though he's Really Great Inspiration/Mad Skillz (In Disguise). Wouldn't it be awesome if that actually HAPPENED? But crossovers tend to help, and it isn't as if you've read every single good fantasy book in the world. I'm sure you'll find one you'll be inspired by! Personally, I'd like to see something from Soul Music. I'd LOVE to see Death with a party hat on, with the IS THIS FUN lettering on it. OR Death of rats hacking off a lump of cheese. Figures they're skeletons, so they're a pain in the butt to draw. So do some Band With Rocks In.
By the way... am I the only one who noticed that you were inpired to draw something by your lack of inspiration?
