Yesterday's Sketchbook - By the time I got home I was tired, mentally exhausted, and my headache hadn't gone away (still hasn't, grr) so I just did the cop-out and drew my cat.

The FINAL episode of Small Gods is up. (dun dun duuunnnn)

...If only V had made the rest of his armour out of the same material as his mask...
Or maybe just a bunch of masks (he had enough to spare) – that would have been sweeet... in a ridiculous kind of way.

A cop-out cat is better than no cat.

Put some ice on your head! Always works for me.

Except that where I sit at work I'm freezing already... :P And ibuprofen has no effect. Thanks for the hint, though; maybe I'll try that at home if it still hasn't gone away.

yes, try it at home. It doesn't matter if you're cold... the relief comes from having the ice pack right on the temple (or where ever).

I thought . . . .

The armor came from the suit of same he was "jousting" with earlier in the film.

Yes, it did, I'm just saying if he was smart* he would have made it out of the same material as his mask, 'cause ... it appears to be impermeable.

Maybe I need to reword that line. [thinks ... really slowly]

That whole thing about him needing to be shot up - while it may have felt really cool and dramatic and made him a Christlike martyr in the end (helps you forgive all the mayhem he caused because he's willing to sacrifice himself)- I'm still turning over in my mind whether that was logically necessary to achieve V's ends or not. I guess I haven't thought about it TOO deeply because I really enjoyed the movie, and I'm probably a little afraid of tainting the memory with a disappointing flaw.

From what I understand, it makes a bit more sense in the graphic novel, which made a much greater impact when I read it in 1995 than neato matrix graphics ever did. V doesn't have to die for his goals, but for Evey, it's a bit of the final test, to see if she really has let her past modes of thinking go. By forging the ideals (V's hopes to take down the government to a point of accountability) within the heat of curiosity (Is V her father?). The book, in a sense wasn't about V, but about V's effect on people, and what that effect does to them. In that sense, it was perfectly logical for V to die; he'd accomplished what he set out to do; he was the last bridge to be burned before the populance could take it as they would. He was merely there to open the door to the everyman (Evey (thus her name)), but it was their choice on to whether they stepped through it.

Does that make sense, or am I just hallucenating due to the flu medication?

Of course, if Alan Moore had his way with it, the movie would have never been made, and the book would have gone out of print ages ago.

That's exactly what I was thinking was the reason for doing it (although I didn't consider the possbility of V being her father, or pick up the "Evey-man" thing, which seems obvious now. Duh.) Emotionally, it made perfect sense and had to happen - I just wish they could have made it logically inevitable as well. But that wasn't enough to really spoil anything for me.
Apparently Alan Moore is a bit of an odd duck - I guess he had a huge falling out with Vertigo comics (I don't know over what) and has decided to stop writing for comics altogether and just write wild, angry Letters to the Editor with his unconventional opinions. Too bad - talented guy, obviously.

Episode 1 was three weeks ago. Check the replies to last Wednesday's post; someone's recorded them and made them available.

You drew your cat... licking herself ^^;
for the headache, drink lots of water. Maybe you're dehydrated. Or if you hate water, gatorade works.

I've had lots of water, I've had lots of sleep, I tried having some sugar and then tried having no sugar at all, ditto with caffeine, I've tried the compression thing and deep breathing and painkillers... it's a stubborn one. The only thing that's worked so far is watching a movie, which took my mind off it for a couple of hours. It'll pass eventually...

Nice cat pictures! I would love to hear more about your cat who is your model. From the drawings your cat seems to be a very regal and lovely model.

And if you still have headaches, I do have a suggestion- if you have the opportunity to try massage therapy, go for it! It is a very practical and easy and enjoyable way to cure headaches or sore arms/neck/back- all of which can contribute to headaches. Especially if you work with your hands and eyes like artists do, a therapeutic massage is often very beneficial. If you live in a community where there is a massage therapy school you might even be able to book a massage at very good prices at the massage therapy school. Just a thought- I have been learning it myself and wind up practicing on the travel agents and computer programmers at my work. It is nice to see what a difference it makes for people and how much better they feel afterwards.

Apparently one of the changes of the new regime (at Disney) is to bring a full-time Massage Therapist into the building - good idea, since we've had at least 5 years of stress an headaches building up all this time...!

Hey, I LIKE that change! I am pretty sure you will enjoy it! Does the company provide the massages or do you get them at a discount rate?

It reflects a general trend. A lot of companies are now providing massage therapists at work as a benefit as well as fitness rooms and such. Massages are so simple and yet really are very effective because they relax muscles and improve one's circulation. Doctors even refer patients to massage therapists now because it is often more effective and beneficial than putting people immediately on medication. Having them available to staff actually increases productivity because of lowering stress, improving morale and health.

Companies in Iceland have been doing this for a long time. Our advertising and layout agency we use in Reykjavík has a massage therapist come in once a week that is available to work on employees (there the employees chip together to bring in the therapist at discoutned rates so each person does not have to pay very much for the service)

I believe they will be free to the employees. Isn't that neat? I think it will still save the company money in increased productivity, as you say. Now if they would only provide free nap rooms with cots (if anyone from Disney is reading, I am only kidding! Yes! Ha ha!)

It's one of the best things you can do. I get about two a year. I don't get headaches, but I do get stiff necks. Man, a staff massage therapist. . . I'd be in line every day. Hands and forearms done by a pro. Ooooohhhhhhh.

My cat is neither regal nor lovely, he just looks that way. He's actually a BRAT. He's taken to waking me up at 4:30 to 5:30am, wanting to be fed – I have never gotten up before my alarm to feed him so I don't know where he got the idea that I would – and I have to get out of bed and kick him out of my room because if I just lie there and ignore him he'll pee on something. Of course, by then, it's too late for me to get back to sleep properly before my alarm goes off... He's also not affectionate at all, but that, I think, is divine justice because neither am I, except with cats.

There is a lady who comes by work once a month with her massage chair, and you can sign up for segments of time. I tried it last time she was here but didn't notice much difference ... and she just does 'relaxation massages,' not massage therapy. I'm a pretty relaxed person anyway, and now that I've figured out how to use my Cintiq without hunching up my shoulders even that problem has gone. Dunno what caused the headache; it didn't feel like a tension headache and even if it was, they usually go away after a good night's sleep.

Ah, sounds like one of my girls. She has taken to hopping on my dresser while I sleep and, around 4am, knocking things from the dresser onto the floor to remind me that I am supposed to feed her. I am to blame for this since I often wake up at 5am to work out, so I have gotten her in the habit of being fed then. I am lucky neither of my cats is arrogant. They are actually very sweet and friendly and act more like dogs- dogs that can jump on dressers at 4 in the morning and knock things off. One of the cats has three legs so she gets a lot of pity from strangers. She has not yet figured out she has only three legs.

Yes, you are right. Massage therapy is very different from relaxation stuff. It is good to hear that you are relaxed and headaches are not such a big problem for you.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why do you even have that cat?? He sounds like nothing more than a drain on your resources - what is the upside? Surely there's a bigger glutton for punishment somewhere, willing to take him off your hands for you.
I'm perversely glad I'm not the only one that was getting MAJOR cramps and pain trying to adjust to using the cintique (my back, my legs, my arms and wrists, my brain, etc.) - finally having a keyboard shelf added to my great old desk has helped a lot (now I can put the screen right on the edge of my desk, spin it around, etc., and the keyboard is finally at the right height for my hands - I was seriously feeling tendonitis or something creeping up my right wrist)

Man - you sound like a battered wife! Guilt? What, did he save your life or something? (yeah, I know, I'm one to talk, the perpetual dormat who's still paying "child support" for those kittens, but that doesn't mean I like seeing this sort of thing happen to other people!) What's the story here? (no pressure :))

Wow, it's ... it's like MAGIC!

Actually, I thought of drawing that as soon as I wrote it, but it would be a lot easier (and a lot more amusing) to make a sort of movie-still collage. I'll just have to wait until the DVD comes out...

He he. I invented it back when i lived in a HP forum that unfortunately is no more. It usually takes a few days to work, but so far it has cured colds, flu, sore backs +++ :P
