There are few things in the world that sound as odd as a tree full of starlings.

One of those is a tree full of Monk Parakeets!

Those are Snape Sim icons, aren't they.

I had a Snape Sim. Our babies looked like Neil Gaiman and Denis Lawson. o.o

*SNORK*s at the thought of Gaiman!Snapelet. There's something oddly appropriate about that.

Yup, they're Sims, but they're not mine, they're [livejournal.com profile] cloudlessnights' - she's doing a terrific job re-creating all the HP books as Sims (she's up to Chamber of Secrets at the moment). I daren't buy the Sims myself; my already non-existent free time would go into negative figures.

They're awesome. I mean, until you get woken up by a flock. ;)

Umm...not as exotic, but mockingbirds, because then you have cars honking and screaming children and cats meowing mixed in with the bird noises.

I thought starlings were natural mockers - I read somewhere that they always copy the habits and behavior of other local birds.

Chickens are the most natural mockers. Just listen to them sometime . . mock . . .mock . . . mock . . .mock

I'm pretty sure they steal other birds' nests ... but everywhere I've gone, starlings have sounded and acted like starlings.

Yes, especially when that make that sucking-air-in-past-half-a-mouthful-of-water sound.

In other news, I once had a cat who quacked.

I have a dog who occasionally tries to growl and yawn at the same time, resulting in an odd gargling noise. It's actually rather endearing.

I imagine it would be! :)

WOW! Quacking cats and gargling dogs - I wish you could post audio files in this entry! I'd love to hear some of these!

I wish I could: sadly the cat is no longer with us.

It was actually an extremely short and abrupt meow, but it came out "wak". Very much like a duck's shorter quacking noises.

Wow - sounds like a rare animal indeed!

I heard that starlings were one of a number of species brought over to North America in the misguided attempt to have every kind of bird mentioned in the works of Shakespeare here - and that the starlings immediately bullied and chased away many of the native songbirds (that sounded much prettier). I do like their beady yellow eyes, though...

Yeah, I hang out with a bunch of ornithologists and we all freakin' hate starlings. Stupid invasive species.

How about a tree full of grackles? They have some pretty bizarre calls, including one that sounds like plastic crackling. Get a bunch of 'em together and yowie! Auntie's poor ears!
