CLICK FOR TO MAKE BIGGAR!

This is a piece of concept art by Andy Harkness, not a final still from the movie, though of course they're going to try to make it look like that. There seems to be some confusion: Rapunzel is not going to be 2D. It is a 3D film. A very nice 3D film, but it is 3D, not 2D. No matter how much some people may plead and moan, the directors want it 3D and they're the ones in charge.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] floramir for pointing this out, and to [livejournal.com profile] aspectabund for posting the BIG one (and some little ones wot you can see in the comments)! Also to Yahoo Movies and the AP for distributing it. Booo to Aint-it-Cool for being slooooow. :P

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. AAAAAAAAAAAH.

Of the top of my head, "Ever After" (Drew Berrymore--can't remember if that's how you spell her name). That was a live action, non-musical fairy tale with a fleshed out plot, and it worked okay. I wasn't overexposed to it like I hear some people are, so I never came to dislike it.

Animated though... I mean, I think that fairy tale or no fairy tale animated movies are just WAY better with songs. There's something about the pacing of musicals that works well with animation. I don't know of any animated fairytales without songs!

"The Polar Bear King" was the movie version of "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" (I'm assuming that counts as a fairytale) and it stuck pretty much to the story (changed the ending big time, though); it had no songs. I wouldn't say it was a great movie but it gave you the same creepy feeling that you got from reading it. "Prince Lindworm" is actually in the same book as "East of the Sun and West of the Moon"; or at least the book that I have.

OK, Ever After was the only non-musical fairy tale movie I could think of, animated or no. I haven't seen The Polar Bear King ... was that a European production? i suppose it could be argued that Emperor's New Groove is sort of like a fairy tale in structure, but it was a)originally intended to be more or less a musical and b)generally wacky, which is hard to do with a love story and have it be emotionally engaging.

So ... how do animated movies work better as musicals if the only animated fairy tales anyone has seen for the last 70 years have been musicals? What is there to compare them to?

Veering away from the fairy tale subject, I would love to see more movies like Great Mouse Detective, Secret of Nimh or what Mulan might have been with less singing and Eddie Murphy. Swashbuckling, man! Why don't people make swashbuckling animated movies? What is there about animation that isn't suited to it? (sorry, taking my gripes out on you...)

And sometimes you get movies that probably would have worked better without the music - case in point, All Dogs Go To Heaven.

But then again, I am convinced that the only reason that movie has songs is to distract the moms in the audience from the fact that they're exposing their kids to what is essentially a crime noir movie. The songs hurt the film, though, because they take a sledgehammer to the tone and characters - you have a hardened con man, the little girl he's shamelessly manipulating in tow, suddenly bursting out into a happy sharing song. 8|

I agree with you on more swashbuckling animated films, though. Let the film be an adventure! The Incredibles was an adventure. How many have we had recently? I mean, I loved Ratatouille but it wasn't exactly an Adventure. And there can be a song here and there if they want, but only if it's the kind that intensifies the emotion that was already there. Definitely don't feel like there has to be a "song" quota to fill the soundtrack, especially since fewer songs would leave more room for awesome score.

Well, who knows how we would feel about it if it didn't feel 'normal' for spectacular musical animated releases to come flying out of nowhere. I took it totally for granted when I was growing up, and I have no idea what I'd be like if I didn't know all the Disney movies by heart. I'm sure it's probably because I'm so accustomed to those kinds of animated movies that I'm always dissatisfied to some degree with any non-musical animated features. I flat-out dislike 3D animation, and no amount of fun that they put in it has ever managed to make me enjoy it. I've been suffering from animated film withdrawal ever since Mulan (I agree that Mulan minus Eddy Murphy would be a welcome improvement). I was SO happy when I saw Enchanted that I was practically hyperventilating. I guess I'm so totally sentimental about this stuff that my judgment is completely impaired.

Hey, I looked up "Polar Bear King" and it's actually Norwegian, so no wonder they stuck to the original. It's worth checking out I'd say if you ever have time. But it's another thing I've watched as far back as I remember, so it's hard for me to look at it critically. The polar bear is a puppet of course, but it (the effects) are not as bad as the original BBC Narnia.

I was also thinking... "Princess Bride" is perfect! It's not technically a real fairytale. But it is like one, and it was done well.

I agree! Bring on the swashbuckling! I love it!
